Further, scrappy startup companies\u2014smartly leveraging disruptive online technologies, the ubiquity of the Internet, and mobile-first consumers\u2014are offering innovative solutions to consumers, and claiming mind- and market share from incumbent insurers.<\/p>\n<p>  Take newcomer Oscar, founded in 2012. The health insurer\u2019s website appeals to younger prospects. Its clever mobile app \u201clets you search symptoms in plain English, find doctors on a Google Maps-like layout, and compare prices on services like MRIs and physical therapy,\u201d <i>Forbes<\/i> wrote <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/stevenbertoni\/2015\/04\/20\/obamacare-startup-oscar-health-hits-a-1-5-billion-valuation\/#7fa757324b74\" target=\"_blank\">last year<\/a>. And when customers hit their fitness goals, they get cash.<\/p>\n<p>  Other startups like Bright Health\u2014which will debut next year, led by a former UnitedHealthcare CEO\u2014are scoring consumer attention, too.<\/p>\n<p>  So why are customer satisfaction levels so low \u2026 and why are disruptive companies stealing the spotlight from incumbents? Consumers\u2019 expectations are evolving rapidly, thanks mostly to innovations in online and mobile technologies. <\/p>\n<p>  \u201c(I)n a time of rising consumer expectations, the user experience of healthcare is falling behind,\u201d analysts for Oliver Wyman wrote in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aha.org\/content\/14\/14wyman-pttoconsumerrevol.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">a recent e-book<\/a>. \u201cParticularly when compared to Uber for personal transport, Amazon for shopping, or Open Table for picking a restaurant and making a reservation. In healthcare, nearly everything is inconvenient, slow, confusing, and opaque.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ey.com\/Publication\/vwLUAssets\/EY-the-future-of-health-insurance\/$FILE\/EY-the-future-of-health-insurance.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Adds Ernst &amp; Young<\/a>: \u201cAt a time of focus on differential value, (insurers\u2019) core offerings are poorly differentiated and largely interchangeable. And despite the huge shift to data and analytics as value drivers and sources of growth, insurers make relatively little use of the data they already generate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>  Customer challenges will remain on the horizon, too. According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gallup.com\/businessjournal\/181829\/insurance-companies-big-problem-millennials.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">2015 Gallup data<\/a>, the next generation of insurance buyers\u2014Millennials\u2014are the least likely generation to feel engaged with insurers. While Millennials are more than twice as likely as other generations to buy insurance online, they\u2019re often dissatisfied with the online experiences insurers provide.<\/p>\n<p>  In this increasingly competitive and cynical environment, established health insurance companies can\u2019t lean on old thinking to reclaim lost ground. <b>Incumbents must adapt and serve customers in three key ways:<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>They must adopt lower cost, higher satisfaction approaches to customer service and support <\/li>\n<li>They must find ways to efficiently manage the complexity of offering programs that vary by state <\/li>\n<li>They must also <b>find new customers, and sell more to them,<\/b> to achieve business growth <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Serving Diverse Customers, Affordably<\/h2>\n<p>  Controlling the cost of supporting a diverse customer base has always been a challenge. Insurers that do this can greatly benefit from serving the fastest-growing segment of the newly insured. They can also lower their costs to support these new customers.<\/p>\n<p>  <b>Spanish-speaking Hispanics represent the most compelling, and historically underserved, U.S. market for health insurers.<\/b> This growing population represents a powerful growth opportunity for incumbent insurers.<\/p>\n<p>  A few fast facts: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewhispanic.org\/2015\/05\/12\/english-proficiency-on-the-rise-among-latinos\/\" target=\"_blank\">Around 75%<\/a> of U.S. Hispanics speak Spanish at home; a full third of Hispanics say they\u2019re not proficient in English. <a href=\"http:\/\/adage.com\/article\/hispanic-marketing\/ad-age-s-2014-hispanic-fact-pack\/294335\/\" target=\"_blank\">More than 35%<\/a> of Hispanics prefer to read online and offline content in \u201call Spanish\u201d or \u201cmostly Spanish.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center; float: right;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"\/\/www.motionpoint.com\/wp-content\/themes\/motionpoint\/images\/content\/news\/Insurance_GraphicCallout.png\"><\/figure>\n<p>  Serving these customers with Spanish-language content is mission critical.
