It\u2019s sometimes hard for a company\u2019s leaders to widen their entrepreneurial perspectives, admits Will Fleming in a recent installment<\/a> of the Crain\u2019s Miami<\/i> interview series If I Knew Then<\/i>.<\/p>\n

However, a willingness to listen to outside points of view can foster meaningful improvements, he says.<\/p>\n

The interview series, which asks business leaders about missteps that have shaped their business philosophy, provided the MotionPoint CEO an opportunity to share an important lesson he learned within the last few years.<\/p>\n

For some time, MotionPoint was \u201ctoo insular in not broadening and deepening our executive team,\u201d Fleming explains in the interview. But after hiring a key executive from outside the company, certain institutional \u201cblind spots\u201d became apparent.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t the things we were doing,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s what we were failing to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

This revelation helped inform steps to improve key strategies and business practices. MotionPoint soon broadened the company\u2019s executive team over a six-month period, bringing in high-level talent from beyond the company\u2014all with relevant outside experience and expertise, Fleming says.<\/p>\n

This expansion has been instrumental in asserting the company\u2019s leading position in its industry. And the move has helped Fleming find a greater understanding in what employees are telling him.<\/p>\n

\u201cUsually, what individuals do is focus on the point-to-point interaction,\u201d he says. He then adds: \u201cBut if I can take a couple of steps back and generalize from what (they\u2019re) trying to tell me, sometimes I can find profound wisdom.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
